Metal Staircase Installation in Dubai: Fabrication, Assembly, Quality Control
A metal staircase is an engineering structure that connects building levels and simultaneously serves as an evacuation route. Unlike a concrete or wooden staircase, a metal one provides a longer span with thinner elements and can be installed in an already finished building without wet work. In UAE construction, metal staircases are used in multi-storey residential complexes, office towers, shopping centres, warehouse facilities and industrial sites. The main types of metal staircases on the Dubai market are straight single-flight staircases, double-flight staircases with an intermediate landing, spiral staircases, ladder stairs and open-type evacuation staircases. A staircase can be fully welded, bolted prefabricated or combined with stainless steel railings.
What types of metal staircases exist by shape and size
A straight single-flight staircase runs from floor to floor without turning and takes up the least amount of space in width. A double-flight staircase has a turning landing between floors and suits a height difference of more than three metres. A spiral staircase is assembled around a central column and is used where there is no space for a straight flight, for example in private residences or on mezzanines. A ladder stair serves for temporary access to height. An open-type evacuation staircase is mounted on the outside of a building and has no finishing. The width of a flight for a main staircase in a public building starts from one metre twenty centimetres. For a service or evacuation staircase, ninety centimetres is sufficient. Step height ranges from fifteen to eighteen centimetres. Tread depth ranges from twenty five to thirty centimetres. The slope of a flight for comfortable movement ranges from thirty to forty degrees. For evacuation staircases, the slope can reach forty five degrees. What metal staircases are made from in Dubai
The staircase frame is welded from hot rolled structural steel. For stringers, the inclined beams that support the steps, channel or I-beam with a height of one hundred four to two hundred millimetres is used. For a bowstring, the side beam into which steps are cut from the end, steel plate eight to twelve millimetres thick is used. Steps are made from chequer plate four to six millimetres thick for outdoor staircases or from smooth plate with anti-slip inserts for indoor staircases. Railings are welded from square or round section hollow profiles. Handrails can be steel with powder coating or stainless steel for buildings with high design requirements. If the staircase is installed outdoors under direct sunlight and in high humidity conditions, all elements receive anti-corrosion primer and a finishing coat.
How a staircase is designed to order
Design begins with measuring the clear distance between floors. Our engineers request the height from the ground floor to the first floor, the available length for the staircase and the opening width. Then the number of steps is calculated. The rise height is divided by the optimal step height of fifteen to eighteen centimetres. The result is rounded to a whole number. Next, the horizontal projection length of the staircase is calculated: the number of steps is multiplied by the tread depth of twenty five to thirty centimetres. If the resulting length does not fit into the available space, the designer adds a turning landing or changes the staircase type to spiral. After the geometry is approved, the stringer cross-section is calculated for real load: the self weight of the staircase plus the live load from people. For public buildings in Dubai, the live load is taken as at least three hundred kilograms per square metre. For private residences, at least two hundred kilograms.
How staircases are fabricated and installed
Fabrication begins with cutting the stringers or bowstring to the dimensions shown on the drawing. Cutting is performed on plasma or band CNC machines. Then the step attachment points are marked on the stringers. The distance between steps must be identical along the entire length of the flight with a tolerance of no more than one millimetre. Steps are cut from sheet metal and welded to the stringers with a continuous weld on each side. After step welding, the railings are welded: posts every ninety to one hundred centimetres and a handrail along the top. Before dispatch, the finished staircase flight is assembled on the workshop jig and checked for geometry. Length deviation must not exceed two millimetres. Width deviation must not exceed one millimetre. Gaps in welds are not permitted. On site, the staircase is lifted by crane or manually depending on weight and building height. Fixing to the floor slab is done through embedded parts or chemical anchors depending on the base type. All bolted connections are checked for tightening torque after installation. Welds made on site undergo visual inspection and selective ultrasonic inspection on loaded joints.

Each staircase comes with a full document package: structural load calculation, steel mill certificates, weld inspection reports and a factory acceptance inspection report. We record the actual dimensions of the staircase after fabrication and compare them with the drawing. If the deviation exceeds the allowable tolerance, the structure is not dispatched until corrected. After installation on site, we perform load testing. The staircase is loaded with the design weight, and the absence of squeaking, play and deformation is checked. The results are recorded in the handover acceptance certificate. If the client notices a problem during the warranty period, our team visits the site within two working days.
