Reinforcement refers to steel or composite bars placed inside a concrete foundation to increase its strength. Concrete performs well under compression but poorly under tension. Reinforcement takes on the tensile loads, increasing the structural resistance tenfold and preventing cracks and deformations. In the UAE, construction is regulated by Dubai Municipality (DM), Civil Defence (DCD), and Law No. 3 of 2026, which tightens building safety requirements. Reinforcement must comply with international standards ASTM A615 or A706.
Reinforcement is needed to prevent the foundation from cracking under the weight of the building, during soil settlement, temperature changes, or seismic activity. In the sandy soil conditions of the UAE, where foundation movement is possible, reinforcement is especially important. Without reinforcement, a concrete strip or slab will quickly fail. Reinforcement also provides frame rigidity and even load distribution across the entire foundation.
Reinforcement is used for all types of foundations in the UAE: strip foundations (for villas and low-rise buildings), raft foundations (for high-rise residential complexes and commercial facilities), as well as column and pile foundations. For light structures — garages, warehouses, temporary buildings — reinforcement with a diameter of 8-10 mm is acceptable. For private villas on stable soil, 12 mm bars are used. For multi-storey residential buildings, shopping centers, and office buildings on sandy and heaving soils, reinforcement of 14-16 mm and above is required. Fiberglass reinforcement (composite) is only used for light structures made of aerated concrete or frame constructions, as its modulus of elasticity is 4-5 times lower than that of steel. In residential and commercial construction in the UAE, preference is given to steel reinforcement conforming to ASTM A615 Grade 60 with a yield strength of 420 MPa. For welded connections, ASTM A706 is used. Emirates Steel in Abu Dhabi produces certified products. Welding of A615 reinforcement is not recommended — the metal weakens at the joints. Fastening is done with tie wire. When selecting reinforcement, factors such as soil type (sandy, heaving), building height, weight of construction materials, and Dubai Municipality requirements are taken into account. All reinforcement must have certificates of conformity. For expert selection of reinforcement for your project, contact Stroy Dubai specialists.
